January 2013 marked the 20th year of JBQ leadership for Paul Markwell. "When my wife Karen and I saw our first round of quizzing in 1992," he says, "we knew we wanted JBQ for our four-year-old son, and his younger siblings." Paul started coaching B League in 1993 and coached B League for 5 years. He then coordinated JBQ at his church, Trinity Chapel Assembly of God in Louisville for 11 years. During that time he also served on the State JBQ Board as Promotions Coordinator.
When State JBQ Coordinator Donald Wade passed away in August 2007, Paul stepped in as coordinator for KY District. Besides JBQ, Paul serves in music ministry, teaches Senior High Sunday School, and serves on the Deacon Board.
Why JBQ? (in his words)"To me, the Word of God is the key ingredient. The more you know it, the more it blesses your life and your family. JBQ is a fun way to fulfill our primary responsibility as parents to teach God's Word to our kids, as we are charged to do in Deuteronomy 6:5-9. The Great Commission starts at home. As a Christian, few things are more important than that.
"Memorizing 576 Biblical facts, including 58 key scriptures, gives kids a vital moral compass, which helps them make wiser decisions, the most important decision being to accept Christ as Lord and Savior, and serve him the remainder of their lives. Ninety-five percent of kids whose families did what we did, serve God through adulthood. Learning God's Word through JBQ is one great insurance policy, especially since the church is losing 75-80% of other kids by the time they're 14.
"JBQ also helps children in school. In JBQ, children develop the capacity to memorize large amounts of material at an early age. They develop mental stamina, and they learn teamwork, and how to think under pressure. These skills really help when they're taking the SAT and ACT, as well as the hundreds of other tests and quizzes they'll take in life.
"As parents, we all have a price to pay. We can either pay it now by investing in our children's spirituality during the elementary school years, or pay it later and let society, and (to a certain degree the church), raise our kids. But if we sit back, we may very possibly pay a terrible price later. There is too much at stake to take that risk.
"No matter how tired you get, you'll never be sorry for spending time teaching your children an in-depth knowledge of the Bible. In the year 2000, I had 3 kids in JBQ at the same time. I spent about 400 hours that season at the dining room table each night, quizzing each kid about 20 minutes a day."
And where are they now?"Well the four year old is now a Chemical Engineer. His little brother is a Computer Engineer, and their little sister is at University of Kentucky. She wants to be a pharmacist. All of them will tell you that JBQ helped them study and do better on tests. All three are serving God through music and other ministries. It's really true that Everyone Who Studies is a Winner, thanks to the key ingredient, God's Word."
